{Critique} No Pain no Gain / {Review} Pain and Gain

Que vaut No Pain No Gain ? Que vaut Michael Bay lorsqu’il ne fait pas de Transformers ? Sujet délicat car je suis tiraillé par deux forces complétements contraires.

What isPain and Gain worth? What is Michael Bay worth when he isn’t making another Transformers film? Delicate subject as I’m being pulled in either direction by two completely opposing forces.

Faisons simple, Mark Wahlberg campe un prof de muscu complètement obnubilé par l’aspect physique, la perfection, et soulever de la fonte. Mais passer sa vie dans un club n’est pas à l’image de son rêve américain, il veut être riche, il veut qu’on le voit riche, il cherche à se faire une image. D’où l’idée d’enlever un homme riche et de lui faire céder ses biens plus ou moins légalement. Pour cela il s’entoure de deux acolytes qui s’avèrent plus barrés que lui, et en voiture Simone.

Let’s keep it simple: Mark Wahlberg portrays a bodybuilder completely obsessed with physical looks, perfection, and pumping iron. But spending his days in a club doesn’t fit his image of the American Dream – he wants to be rich, he wants people to see him rich, he wants to get himself an image. Hence the idea of kidnapping a rich man and making him hand over his possessions, more, or less, legally. To achieve this he surrounds himself with two accomplices who are even crazier than he is… now let’s move on.

Et là on peut se dire, on est même en droit de le faire, que le scénario n’est pas extraordinaire et que ce n’est visiblement pas là qu’il faut chercher son bonheur. Ça, c’est la première force qui me pousse à ne pas aimer le film.  Blagues scabreuses, humour en dessous de la ceinture mais pour une fois sans explosion de ville (manque de budget probablement) de la part de Bay. Et puis il y a la deuxième force, celle qui me pousse à aimer ce film, celle qui me fait me dire : « mais bon sang c’est une histoire vraie ! »

And here we can say to ourselves, we even have the right to do so, that the premise isn’t fantastic, and that it isn’t from here that you will get your enjoyment. This is the first force, which pushes me into disliking the film. Suggestive humour, below the belt jokes, but this time without a town exploding (probably a lack of budget) from Bay. And then there is the second force, which pushes me into liking the film, which made me say: ‘oh my God, this is a true story!’

Et la « force » (sans trop exagérer non plus) du film est là. C’est de se rendre compte rétrospectivement que toutes ces choses qu’on nous fait avaler se sont véritablement passées. Alors oui le ton humoristique est sans doute là pour faire joli, néanmoins les acteurs donnent de leurs corps sans trop sortir de leurs rôles habituels, et Bay critique une frange de la population américaine, celle vouée à l’image, à un « pseudo rêve américain » complétement bancal.

And the ‘force’ (without me exaggerating too much either) of the film is here. It’s realising retrospectively that all these things we are made to swallow actually did happen. So yes, the humorous tone probably is there to make it look good, nevertheless the actors give it all they’ve got without really leaving their usual roles, and Bay criticises a section of the American population - those devoted to image, to the completely off the rails ‘pseudo American Dream’.

No Pain No Gain n’est pas le film de l’année, ce n’est pas un nanar non plus, le film est rythmé et suffisamment drôle pour nous tenir jusqu’au bout, la bande son est également un gros point fort et l’ensemble des acteurs forme une très belle brochette, chacun y allant de sa narration afin de donner plusieurs points de vue à l’histoire. Un bon divertissement.

Pain and Gain isn’t film of the year, but it isn’t a z-movie either; the film has a good pace and is sufficiently funny to hold your attention until the end, the soundtrack is also a strong point in its favour, and the majority of the actors form a very tight group, with each character having their own narration to give the story several points of view. A good distraction.
