The Xbox One's first arcade game, Max: The Curse of Brotherhood, came out quietly at the end of the month of December. Did Microsoft want to keep the release low-key because it was ashamed? Does Max have a deep, dark, secret, that he would rather keep to himself? What do these 2Gb or so of downloadable data have to hide???
Press Play's game had been announced a little while ago now... but for release on the Xbox 360; playable during E3 2013, it revealed itself to be a fun and colourful platform game which was dynamic and original in its conception. Why? Because, as well as controlling the young Max in a side-scrolling 2.5D world, the player also controls a magic marker able to interact with the background (in a relatively scripted way) to resolve certain riddles and make our boy advance through the story. Making branches grow, elevating pillars of earth or creating tunnels of water will become your daily tasks.
Graphically not impressive enough for the Xbox One, Max remains very pretty and pleasing to the eye, exploiting multiple colours, and different levels, which are sometimes superb (the caves), sometimes a bit muted (the forest), but okay in general. On the gameplay side the young boy is easily controlled, but some people will have a bit of trouble using the marker, at least the first few times. I admit that I didn't have any problems there, or any of the other problems that I read about on various sites.
Scenario-wise, it is a simple idea, the exploration of a parallel universe, nothing is great, the staging is fairly weak, and the 'baddie' a bit dull. No matter though, the game has an atmosphere that can be soaked up with ease, making you think of the excellent Heart of Darkness (those that had a PS1 will remember), which isn't nothing.
So why so little communication around the first arcade game? Mystery. Max: The Curse of Brotherhood shouldn't be ashamed of its weaknesses, its poorly managed difficulty curve (without it being impossible), nor its 4-5 hour lifespan. In this period where gamers will have completed their first games, this title presents itself as a breath of fresh air while waiting for the next part of the programme.
15/20.
